PHSA Talks About Comics

We were at the Philippine High School for the Arts (PHSA) yesterday,
February 10, 2009 to give a talk about comics (it's history, the need
for a formalized system of learning, and the business involved in the
production and distribution of digital comic books.

Gerry, Johnny, and I met up at the waiting shed near the UPLB gate to wait
for the PHSA school bus to come pick us up and bring us to the venue.

We arrived an hour early and what did we do?

We cam-whored to pass the time!

The place was spectacular being nestled in the bosom of Mt. Makiling herself!

We walked around a bit to check out the place.

We headed off to the site of the old cafeteria which burned down a long time ago.

Even at it's sorry state it still exuded an air of mystery.

A bit of a walk downhill from the cafeteria,
brought us to this really steep hill.

It's not readily apparent here how steep this place is.

The location allowed us to perform some pretty cool optical illusions.

The lecture proper was done in their ballet studio since the auditorium
was being prepared for an event they were having that night.

The kids sitting attentively while Gerry started off the lecture.

It was kind of surreal holding a lecture in a place which had mirrors all around...

and which had such high ceilings!

After the lectures, Johnny had an impromptu inner dance
massage session much to the delight of the students!

Soon enough though the lectures and open forum ended and
we headed back down to UPLB c/o the PHSA school bus.

Gerry, Johnny, and I decided to have some coffee
before we parted ways. A perfect way to end the day!

Asia Pacific College Talks About Comics

Last February 3, 2009 saw Johnny and I heading off to the
Asia Pacific College to give a lecture about the history of comic
books and the new business frontier of comic books respectively.

Since the business part of comics was my chosen topic, I decided
to dress up a bit and forgo my usual shirt and denim ensemble.

Johnny wore his usual indie style getup.

We were met by Kystle, Trypod's representative, which was
the student organization who invited us over for the lecture.

Krystle was nice enough to treat us to lunch at the nearby Max Fried Chicken.

Apparently, it was sort of the APC's pop art week. There were all sorts
of art being created on the school grounds itself when we got there.

The students were using tarpaulin as their canvass.

Aside from the tarps there were also drawings on the pavement.

We used to do stuff like this as well back when we were students.

I was happy to note that Nora Aunor has enter pop culture consciousness.

We were happy to find out that Wilson Tortosa will also be joining us on
this particular symposium. It's been ages since we last got together!

After getting setup, we got the show on the road!

Johnny and his lecture on the history of comic books.

We had a very attentive audience which is always very much appreciated.

After our lectures and the open forum, the three of us proceeded to
conduct a portfolio review and answer advanced question about art.

Plan International Workshop

RMPF held a workshop last November 27, 2008 for
Plan International about drawing for storyboards.

We had a bunch of high school kids and one college student
(roughly 20-25 all in all) coming from different parts of the Philippines.

One of the things that made the workshop enjoyable was the
fact that the kids were so eager to learn and enthusiastic.

They worked really hard and a lot of them were quite good.

Here's Johnny giving some tips on drawing.

We gave some free comics away to reward the kids for working hard.

Jonas Diego

Jonas has been a comic book professional since the year 2000. He is a contributor to the comic book anthology Siglo: Passion which won Best Comic Book of the Year at the National Book Awards held by the Manila Critics Circle on August 31, 2006. He produces comic books for US and UK independent publishers for a variety of traditional (print) and non-traditional channels (mobile content and webcomics).

Manix Abrera

Manix is one of the country's most popular cartoonist. A graduate of Fine Arts at the University of the Philippines at Diliman, he is the creator of the popular comic strip, Kiko Machine serialized daily at the Philippine Daily Inquirer. Visprint Publishing publishes and distributes his Kiko Machine comic strip compilations. He is currently taking up his MA at UP Diliman.

Ariel Atienza

Ariel is a graduate of Fine Arts from the University of Santo Tomas. He has been a lifelong cartoonist, is one of the founders of the artist group, Artist's Den, and also has been teaching cartooning as far back as 2005. His works have appeared on various publications such as Live the Life, Candy, Fusion, Philippine News, Topak, and Nosebleed Magazine.

Andrew Villar

Andrew, or teacher Andrew, as many of his old students affectionately call him, is a teacher by trade but a comic book creator by heart. He is a contributing comic book artist to the Manila Bulletin and a High School Teacher and Arts and Media Coordinator for the Community of Learners School for Children.

Johnny Danganan

Johnny has a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from the University of the Philippines in Los Banos but has been a disciple of the arts all his life. He is an inner dance practitioner and healer, a painter (oil, pastels, watercolors, and acrylic), an avid blogger, and a comic book fanatic.
